USATF Minnesota Athlete of the Month - May 2017

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Anthony Fleischfresser, a senior from Spring Lake Park High School, had an amazing 6’11” high jump performance at the Ron Sass Invitational on May 5th, 2017 at White Bear Lake High School, which is good for the best high school performance in Minnesota and is tied for 24th best jump in the nation this year, earning him the title of USATF Minnesota May Athlete of the Month. Fleischfresser’s jump is also tied for the 5th best high jump in the history of Minnesota track & field.

Fleischfresser went on to place 3rd in the high jump at the Minnesota State High School League Track & Field State Championships on June 9th-10th with a jump of 6’6”.

Maggie Ewen, a redshirt junior at Arizona State University and a native of St. Francis, Minnesota, was named the Pac-12 Female Athlete of the Year after her performances at the Pac-12 Conference Championships and other meets throughout the year, earning her the honor of being USATF Minnesota’s May Athlete of the Month. At the Pac-12 meet on May 13th-14th, Ewen captured the conference title in the hammer throw, discus, and shot put, becoming just the second-ever thrower to win three conference titles in the same meet and just the fourth-ever female athlete to do so within the conference. Her winning mark of 70.20 meters in the hammer throw at the conference championships made her the first athlete to break the 70-meter mark in the history of the meet.

Ewen went on to win NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Title in the hammer throw on June 7th-10th with a collegiate record throw of 73.32 meters. To put Ewen’s throw in perspective, she came less than 20 yards short of a full-length football field. She also placed 2nd in the discus throw, and 6th in the shot put at the NCAA Championships, earning her her 2nd and 3rd All-American honors of the meet and 6th and 7th All-American honors of her career. On June 14th, Ewen was also named the USATFCCCA Women’s National Field Athlete of the Year for the 2017 Outdoor season and is one of 10 semifinalists for the prestigious award called “The Bowerman”, which recognizes the top collegiate male and female track & field athletes each year. Ewen will go on to compete at the upcoming USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California on June 22-25 in the hammer throw competition, vying for a spot on Team USA going to the IAAF World Championships in London on August 4th-13th.
