August and September 2018 Athletes of the Month

10/8/2018

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MN - As the summer racing season wraps up and fall approaches with cooler temps and cross country meets, there are plenty of athletes putting out fantastic performances, whether it be on the track, roads or grass, and representing Minnesota well. First, Hassan Mead, the former Golden Gopher, claimed the NACAC Senior 5k title while representing Team USA in Toronto, Canada and Kelly Boler, local to Minneapolis, became the USATF Minnesota 15k Champion - earning them both titles of August Athlete of the Month from USATF Minnesota. Also, Megan and Bethany Hasz secured a 1-2 finish for the Golden Gophers women’s team at the Roy Griak Invitational and Max Manley of Edina High School won his first Griak Invitational title, earning them the title of September Athlete of the Month.

Hassan Mead, current Oregon Track Club Elite member, “couldn’t say no” to the chance to put on the Team USA singlet and accepted a place on the U.S. contingent that competed at the NACAC (North American, Central American and Caribbean) Championships in Toronto from August 10th-12th. With a time of 14:00.18, Mead won gold in the senior 5k beating out fellow Team USA member Riley Masters, giving him the honor of USATF Minnesota’s August Athlete of the Month. Currently training in Eugene, Oregon, Mead is a former Minnesota state cross country champion for Minneapolis South, is still the current state meet record holder, and was also a 2016 U.S. Olympian and 2017 USATF 10k Champion.

Kelly (Brinkman) Boler, a Hutchinson, Minnesota native and 2020 Olympic Marathon Team Trials qualifier, broke the state record for 37 year old women, a record that has stood since 1983, with her 55:55 finish at the USATF Minnesota 15k Championship hosted by the MDRA 15k, earning her the title of USATF Minnesota 15k Champion and August Athlete of the Month. A long-time local Minnesotan runner, Boler also qualified for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Team Trials with her 2:43:45 finish at the Houston Marathon this past January, where she finished 13th overall among women and was the 4th American.

Claiming his first Roy Griak Invitational title after finishing sixth a year ago, Max Manley of Edina High School won the Larry Zirgibel H.S. Boys Gold race at the Roy Griak Invitational over Roseville’s Acer Iverson in a time of 15:45.9, securing him the title of USATF Minnesota’s September Athlete of the Month. With his first place individual finish, the first individual boys title from an Edina Hornet, Manley also led his team to a 9 point victory over Olathe North from Kansas, giving Edina their first team title at the Roy Griak Invitational in school history.

The Hasz sisters, Bethany and Megan, swept the top two individual places in the Jack Johnson Women’s Gold (DI) race at this year’s Roy Griak Invitational on September 29th in electrifying fashion, leading the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers to their first team title in ten years. Bethany Hasz led the way with the 1st place finish, becoming just the third Golden Gopher to win Griak’s individual crown, in a time of 20:47.9 with her sister Megan Hasz close on her heels in 2nd place with a time of 20:54.3.
